Community and conference interpreting
Typical community interpreting assignments include family occasions, different kinds of events in the workplace, hobbies, running errands and dealing with public services, as well as occasional lectures or short courses. Via also provides interpreting at seminars, conferences and on TV. Interpreting is usually booked either by the authorities or by customers themselves who are legally entitled to the service. Interpreting services are also available to other organizations and individuals according to the price list.
Educational interpreting
In Finland, educational interpreting is traditionally seen as a specialized field of sign language interpreting, requiring in depth knowledge of the field in question. Educational interpreting is therefore usually provided by a team of interpreters.
Educational interpreting takes place at educational institutions from compulsory schools to universities, where one or more deaf, deafened or hard of hearing students are studying. Interpreting in compulsory school is financed by municipalities. From secondary level on, educational interpreting is financed by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).
Speech-to-text interpreting
Both community and educational interpreting can also be provided as speech-to-text interpreting. This is a form or intralingual interpreting, where the spoken message is typed on a computer screen. The interpreter provides the required equipment.
