Required qualifications
The requirements for a permanent employment contract as a sign language interpreter are as follows: a polytechnic degree as a sign language interpreter (210–240 ECTs) and at least a few years of practical work experience. For a fixed term contract and hourly work, the requirement is either a polytechnic degree or a three-year secondary level degree and work experience.
For a permanent or fixed term contract and hourly work as a text interpreter, the required qualification is completion of a speech-to-text interpreting course organised by the Finnish Federation of the Hard of Hearing and passing the text interpreting test of Via and Omnivis Oy (speed 9,000 strokes/30 minutes). The required qualification for a sign language interpreter doing text interpreting is to have passed the test referred to above.
The required qualification for a teacher of sign language/signs is subject studies in sign language or a polytechnic degree in sign language interpreting and a minimum of basic studies in pedagogy or corresponding studies (e.g., basic studies in special pedagogy or specialisation studies in education) or excellent competence in sign language and pedagogic subject studies.
The required qualifications for an office worker are a suitable secondary or tertiary degree for the task (e.g. payroll accounting, invoicing, secretarial tasks) and work experience.
Students at the final stage of their interpreting studies can also seek employment at Via. A minimum requirement for students is that they pass the test for interpreter registration. Pay for students is subject to reductions outlined in Via’s collective agreement.
